LOG 061102 It arrived today! I built all but the engine cover grill due to painting factors. Need to fill old missile holes that the original came with. Then, major paint job over the whole, glue engine grills and decals and done. I may paint where decals should go, I haven't decided yet. No lights for this one. Mold: minimal flash, but will have to shave down seams around the entire ship. I could have it done by sunday. 061104 Gave the base coat a camo gray from model masters on the hull. Then, a number of black washes before decals/insignia then probable matte coat seal. Probably next weekend. 061224.00 I gave the bottom of the ship a light white spray on its camo gray base. It's a nice look. Though it needs putty and sculpting on top before any painting. Then it's a decision on airbrushing graphics or using decals... 061231.03 Puttied all (most...) of the seams(ugh!). It took an hour plus. I need to file down and do a second round, but it's cool, I can go for decals or airbrushing after that. Getting some references of course would also be helpful first. 070101.06 Filed down. Could use a second round, but we'll see. 070129.20. I gave it a minor second round sanding and putty and I'll proceed with painting tomorrow. 070131.23 I went with the black and silver mix wash and painted all of it yesterday. Also gave appropriate portions a heavy wash of black extra. Despite nearly 18 hours to dry, some of the thicker black cracked when the matte spray went on it today. I did the bottom first and the engine shroud separate. I allowed four hours for that to dry and then did the top. After an hour, I glued the engine hood down. Finally, I gave the front and the back an extra pass on the matte spray. Later in the evening I was heavily tempted (numerous times) to throw the decals on. I finally succumbed. I got a bowl of hot water, and with cut decals in hand, I grabbed the bottle of Solvaset. Reading the directions on the bottle, the first words I saw "once paint has fully dried...". I dumped the bowl of hot water right then and walked away. So the decals go on tomorrow, but the kit is officially complete today. 070228 The decals went on very nicely and far easier than i thought they might due to their bulky size. While waiting for the Solvaset to work, I had doubts and made incisions in the decals in places I didn't think would work out. Turned out to be likely unnecessary as the Solvaset really works wonders! Now, there are a few small gaps in the decals and the body where I sliced, but they are relatively insignificant. Revell is suppposedly re-releasing newly engineered BG kits this summer and I will get one or two more Raiders, along with a couple Vipers. The Basestar is supposedly getting the most reworking (and lords of Kobol know it needs it), but don't know if I'lll bother. No word on the big G, though people are forecasting later in the Fall for Xmas, or next summer... As I was matting a few kits yesterday, I decided to give the Riader one last pass now that the decals had settled on for a few weeks. It looks astounding! The decals now look like they were painted on. I never would have guessed they could look this good! Over the next weeks, I'm going to reseal several other kits with decals on them as well.. So though I said it a month ago, this kit is NOW done! New pix to follow. 080618.00 Possibly the best paint job I've done yet. ![]() I didn't trust the solvaset and made a bad cut on a wing prominence. I would have to get new decals and wash these off. ![]() ![]() I will detail the ship properly later. |
