LOG 070805.18 Finally broke down and ordered this one from Larson Designs. The selling point was the web page of another buyer's build up. This is a really quality kit and I look forward to doing this piece massive justice with ligths and detailing. It should be here this week even! 070811.22 Arrived a few days ago, missing the three arms. Larson has them in the mail to me now. The kit is some kind of plastic/resin mold. Simple parts, a simple build. I will have to drill for lights, but there's plenty of room to hide everything in this kit. Will try to run off of an internal 9volt. The kit itself is accurate enough from what I can tell. The casting is moderate. There are plenty of scrathes and scuffs molded into the hull. Unfortunately, most every surface will need fill and sanding before anything else. The pieces generally fit well, though putty will be required everywhere. Once I have the arms, I will relate a more detailed review. 070923 The arms arrived some time ago and fit well enough. I will have to make absolutely sure that they are parallel as there is some play in their postioning. This one is on hold for some time as I attempt to knock off several others that sprang up and are already in the pipeline. When I pull this kit out again, I will give a definitive review. 071223.23 Two weeks ago, I washed all the parts for this one and put it away again. I may drill into them all tonight or tomorrow. Not having my computer lately has got me at a loss. I finished up a bunch of other commitments, so I got to dig into this kit. This one is on the interim list until I get the fiber optics in stock. And if I can have this ready for wiring by the time I have the wiring would be great timing. .23 I decided to go ahead and do some drilling on this one. I got all but the central hull drilled before something very bad happened. And that bad thing is the dremel sparking with some flame and smoke. I will plug it in tomorrow, but I'm sure that it is dead. I don't know how badly that affects me, but likely made things tough... Otherwise, I glued as many parts together as possible. I will silver it tomorrow and possibly white again by the end of the day. It won't be possible to put a battery inside the body. The model is simply not engineered for it. To run the wires out the top or the bottom? Does it need to be lit? Maybe not. It would mean that my dremel burnt out for nothing. The warrantee should still be good. Let's skip lights. This one is for hanging. And without a battery, lights are not feasible. A harsh critique on the molding and pieces to follow sometime. I can paint all but the light cones. I need reference for those first. I will likely need to putty the rims and redo the entire surface. 071224.14 I painted all silver, then the Stone Gray (Rustoleum Home Accents). I then threw it alt ogether. I used the central hole drilled holes for the heavy gauge fishing line to loop through. As of now, I'm going to hang it and call it done. What really needs to be done? Re-surfacing everywhere and a proper paint job with decals. I'm going to let the upper hull cure until tomorrow when I will hang it. I won't be decaling it until the next final-round of work. So there will be a Phase 2 somewhere down the line, but not soon, nor before all the current backlog is chopped down significantly. Potentially, I'll break it apart for lighting and possibly even like it later on as well. I'm overall disappointed with the casting that it took all the life out of me on this one. From a distance, it looks good. But look at it close and there are scratch marks, holes, pits, blobs and so on. Everywhere. I expect that this is from an old, old mold. Fresh castings of this kit are probably very nice. Not this one though. |
